High Potential and Gifted Education

HPGE results will be emailed to prospective Year 7 2025 parents early Term 4. Please refer to this website for further updates as they become available.

Killara High School promotes engagement and challenge for every student in every classroom across intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical domains of potential, while explicitly identifying and addressing the learning needs of high potential and gifted students. We are committed to the provision of high-quality differentiated learning opportunities for all students.

To cater specifically to the intellectual domain of high potential and gifted students, Killara High School offers places in a High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) class in Year 7.

Students in these classes will be engaged in learning opportunities that challenge and inspire students to achieve and stretch their potential. Teachers are trained in pedagogical practice to provide lesson structure, content and assessment to enhance student outcomes.

Entry into the Year 7 HPGE classes will be determined through the following process:

1. Placement test

2. Handwritten letter to the Principal, Mr Chand

Placement Test
The Australian Council of Educational Research General Ability Test (AGAT) is an online test to assess students’ general reasoning ability. Students will be provided with a computer to access this test at our school.  The test assesses students’ reasoning skills in three areas:

  • Verbal
  • Numerical
  • Abstract (visual)

Letter
Students are then asked to write a letter to Killara High School’s Principal, Mr Robin Chand outlining what they would like to achieve in the Year 7 HPGE program and what skills they would like to enhance whilst at Killara High School. Click here for letter template.

Selection and Offers
The Year 7 HPGE classes will be determined after close examination of the test results and the letter to the Principal. Successful applicants will be required to respond indicating whether they intend to accept their place in this program.
